- Cut count. A reduction is hundreds of individual decisions, each cut placed at a lateral, and a wide dense crown simply contains more of them than a narrow one. Time follows the cut count.
- What is underneath. Reduction cuts come off the crown edge, which is the part hanging over your roof, deck or the neighbour's yard, so most pieces get roped down rather than dropped.
- Species response. Trees that reduce well, like maples and lindens, price straightforwardly. Trees that respond poorly, some conifers especially, may need a staged plan over two or three seasons, quoted as such.
- Vista precision. Opening a broad general view is faster than threading a specific sightline from one window to one landmark, which involves repeated climbing, checking and adjusting.

When you need this

Toronto's Chapter 813 regulates injury to trees of 30 cm DBH and up, measured at 1.4 m, and a heavy reduction can qualify as injury, with ravine protected land under Chapters 813 and 658 regulated at any tree size. Elsewhere the thresholds are Brampton and Hamilton at 30 cm, Burlington at 20 cm, Woodbridge at 20 cm under Vaughan By-law 177-2025, Mississauga at 15 cm in some zones, and Oakville at 76 cm circumference. Topping cuts limbs off at whatever height someone decided, leaving stubs with no branch to take over. The tree responds with dense, weakly attached sprout regrowth, the stubs decay, and within a few years the tree is taller, uglier and genuinely more dangerous than before, assuming it survives. Crown reduction cuts each limb back to a live lateral branch that is large enough to assume the leading role, so growth continues along natural lines and the wounds can close. The visual difference a year later is total: a reduced tree looks like a slightly smaller version of itself, and a topped tree looks like a hat rack growing hair. Plenty of companies will still top a tree for cash. We are not one of them, and if topping is the only thing that solves your problem, the honest conversation is about removal and replanting.

When is the best time of year for a crown reduction? +
Dormant season, late fall through early spring, for anything substantial. The tree's structure is visible without leaves, which matters enormously when every cut is a structural decision, and the tree heads into spring growth with the reduced framework already in place. Light reductions and vista adjustments can happen in summer, and summer has one advantage: you see the actual foliage density and the actual view. We avoid heavy reduction during spring leaf out, when the tree's reserves are lowest, and during drought stress in high summer. Oaks are dormant season only as an oak wilt precaution. If your reduction is motivated by a specific event, a June party on the deck, tell us early. The good calendar slots for big reductions are in winter and they book up.
Do I need a permit to reduce a large tree in Toronto? +
Possibly, and this is the one pruning service where that is true. Toronto's Chapter 813 protects trees of 30 cm trunk diameter and up, and it covers injuring a tree, not just removing it. A light reduction done to proper standards is maintenance. A heavy reduction that removes a large share of the live crown can cross into injury territory, and on ravine protected land trees of any size are regulated. Our approach: at the quote we tell you whether the reduction you want fits comfortably inside maintenance, needs to be scaled back, or warrants a permit application, and we handle the application if it comes to that. What we will not do is quietly over cut a protected tree and leave the liability on your property file. Outside Toronto, thresholds differ by municipality and we check them as part of every reduction quote.
How much can you reduce a tree by? +
Meaningfully, but less than people hope, and honesty here saves you money and the tree. As a working rule, a healthy tree in a tolerant species can lose a modest fraction of its height and spread in one pass, enough that you clearly see the difference from the street. Beyond that, we are removing so much live canopy that the tree responds with stress and sprout regrowth, which defeats the purpose.
